Not part of the movie Star Wars universe, this tremendous vessel appeared in the Dark Empire comic book series as the flagship of a cloned Emperor Palpatine. Only one such ship existed in that story, the Eclipse itself, built by the proliferous facilities at Kuat Drive Yards, though, according to the Star Wars Technical Commentaries, there was also an Eclipse II. At 17,500 meters in length and with dimension ratios close to that of an Imperial-class Star Destroyer, the Eclipse occupied an immense volume of space, and it had the power to match. It was built around an advanced version of the Death Star superlaser, one that fired with a third less power than the original but with only one emitter, mounted along the ship's lengthwise axis. It could be fired once a day at full power and eight times a day at nominal power, whatever "nominal" means for a superlaser. Supporting this main weapon were a collection of 550 heavy laser cannons, 500 turbolaser batteries, 75 ion cannons, one hundred tractor beam emitters, ten gravity well generators, and hundreds upon hundreds of fighter and ground assault craft. These and other ship systems were managed by a crew of 708,470 and 4,175 gunners.
Even with all this seeming invincibility, the Eclipse had a short life, much shorter than the many years it took to build it. When another of the Emperor's superweapons, the World Devastators, were turned against their maker, the jet-black flagship died with the reborn dictator. Yet more of the Star Wars universe's fascinating recurrence of stalwart little people defeating near-invincible machinery and Darkness.
One curious detail sticks out about the Eclipse: propaganda claimed that its hangar bay could hold a Victory-class Star Destroyer; yet, for a ship of its size, that seems to have been a relatively small feat. Perhaps its power generators took up a large amount of the interior and thus limited the size of other features.
