Though its wedge shape is reminiscent of the Empire's Star Destroyers, the Im-418 is a far different kind of starship. Only lightly armed with its defensive array of twenty quad laser cannons (or double lasers, depending on whom you ask) designed for use against starfighters, the primary feature of the Interdictor is its four large gravity well generators. Housed in eight hemispherical pieces (four protruding from the hull dorsal, four from the ventral), these devices create a massive gravimetric distortion when engaged, thereby tricking hyperdrive computers into dropping their ships out of hyperspace to avoid the supposedly-imminent impact with a large body. The Interdictor can then be quite useful as an Imperial trap-setter, snatching Rebel ships right out of hyperspace and forcing them to do battle with the forces of the Empire. Quite an impressive job description for a mere 600-meter-long ship crewed by 2,783. Still, its poor armament, commanded by 24 gunners, demands that it be escorted at all times by ships with more firepower, in addition to the handful of TIEs it carries (two squadrons). The advent of the Eclipse- and Sovereign-class Super Star Destroyers, both equipped with several gravity well generators, would have rendered the Im-418 obsolete if they had ever become commonplace. However, that was not to be, and so chances are that Sienar Fleet Systems' Interdictor lives on in the shadowy remnants of the Empire.
